Andrea Lazarska Review
The last of Gita Desai Trilogy documents the deep wisdom of Indian vedic teaching. Following Yoga Unveiled, devoted to a yoga tradition, and Raga Unveiled, dealing with classical Indian music, Gita extensively and with bravura presents another Indian gem, its medical system known as "ayurveda".
In a respectable almost five hours long film we are given a tour through the excellent world of traditional Indian medicine via an enchanting picture, music and words. We learn about its history, fundamental principles and concepts, attitude to and methods of healing, its philosophical as well as psychological view, and all that from renowned ayurvedic doctors, scientists and scholars like e.g. Vasant Lad, David Frawley, Robert Svoboda, Claudia Welch, Martina Ziskova, Sadhguru, Deepak Chopra, Subhash Ranade and others. The movie also includes archieval recordings of a Transcendental Meditation founder, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
The film produces the deep wisdom of ayurveda with a great feeling for details. Views of world-class personalities of individual themes, as well as their philosophical contemplation of concepts of ayurveda are very impressive. I was very pleasantly surprised by the passage highlighting the importance of sanskrit, the most perfect language of the world, in healing as well as its role in preservation of this sacred knowledge. Mentioning sanskrit in a film about ayurveda confirms the precision and accuracy with which Gita Desai studied the teaching of ayurveda. All intensified by music, recitation of sanskrit slokas, paintings and pictures of Indian life. From your screen, the spirit of India literally breathes upon you and you get a feeling that, at that moment, you are a part of something great, significant, true and beautiful. Thus, the film becomes a pleasure for your soul and a caress of your heart, it is amazingly colourful and in some places almost sweet-smelling. If, by chance, somebody should be discouraged by its length, then please let me assure you that it is possible to watch individual chapters selectively based on your personal interest. But honestly … the film touches your heart so intensively and it enriches you with new knowledge or realization at the same time that you do not even notice how quickly the time passes.
From my point of view, it is the excellent piece of work having no other weak point than the fact that after 5 hours it finishes. Moreover, it requires a repetitive watching. Certainly, with every other watching you may discover an information that will speak to you.
Finally, I would like to emphasize the fact that Gita Desai, in her longstanding effort and in the form of "Unveiled" Trilogy, has managed to breathe new life into a unique project which is beyond any doubt worth seeing and supporting.
